Intro to PharmGKB Focus

PharmGKB's Focus feature allows you to tailor how you see the data on our site. Selecting a Focus changes the display so that annotations relevant to that field are pulled out and prominently displayed.

To start with, we are supporting a Focus on pediatrics. You can always enable it by flipping the switch in the Focus menu at the top of the page. The switch will also be available on any page that supports the Focus functionality.

The image on the right shows the Pediatric Focus switch on the efavirenz clinical annotations tab. In the default mode, with Pediatric Focus disabled, you will see all clinical annotations for efavirenz.

With the Pediatric Focus enabled, pediatric clinical annotations are displayed in a separate table, with non-pediatric annotations displayed in a second table underneath. Selecting a Focus does not remove any annotations from the display and you can still access all PharmGKB annotations, regardless of which Focus is selected.

In addition to reorganizing the main content to spotlight the selected Focus, the tabs on the left will also change to highlight sections that have data on the selected Focus with a custom icon.

PharmGKB also produces supplementary content specific to a particular Focus.

The pediatric Focus highlights annotations which have been tagged as pediatric. More details about how the pediatric tag is assigned can be found here. The pediatric tag is used to power our pediatric dashboard, which shows the proportion of pediatric annotations across PharmGKB and acts as an entry point to our pediatric annotations.

PharmGKB pediatric summaries are displayed on the overview tab of drug and gene pages when the pediatric Focus is selected. These summaries are written by PharmGKB curators and cover information from relevant pediatric annotations in PharmGKB. Pediatric drug summaries also include pediatric information from FDA drug labels.

Pediatric summaries are currently available for drugs which either have CPIC recommendations or are on the BPCA list. Summaries for drugs with pediatric annotations as well as for a selection of pharmacogenes will be made available in the near future.
