Abstract (January, 2010)

Goals

The main objective of this project is to address normative questions in pharmacogenomics through new approaches in bioethics. A key feature of these novel approaches is that they take into account the complexity of interactions in networks, which are crucial in systems biology-based science as well as in systems-oriented social sciences research.
The project aims at building innovative models that can be used in ethics protocols both in research and in clinical as well as public health practice. Focus of the PIE project is on the normative implications of systems-based pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics.

Progress

Research topics in the current phase of PIE are, for example, the normative aspects of:

  • PGx related data collection and data sharing
  • research and clinical trial design in personalized medicine and healthcare
  • study participant-researcher interaction, consent and return of results
  • PGx and public health genomics

The PIE project is currently located at the European Centre for Public Health Genomics (ECPHG) at Maastricht University. The PIE research questions are being addressed in cooperation with a group of international collaborators.
